Documents to bring

Frequently asked questions
Can the TIE be sent by post?
No. The card is handed over in person at the assigned office, and that requires a collection appointment. It is not posted.
Can someone else collect it for me?
In some cases yes, with a signed authorisation, a copy of the holder’s document and the receipt. Each office applies its own criteria, so confirm before attending.
Is it the same appointment as the fingerprints?
No. They are two separate procedures and two separate appointments. The collection office may also differ from the one where you gave fingerprints: your receipt states it.
What if I lose the fingerprint receipt?
Go to the office or contact them: the file can normally be identified with your passport and NIE, but the process is slower and some offices require the receipt.
How much does the service cost?
From €49 for managing the appointment, and you only pay once it is confirmed and you can verify it. Official fees, where the procedure requires them, are paid directly to the administration.

Collecting the card (recogida de TIE) is a separate appointment from the fingerprint appointment. The card is manufactured after your fingerprints are taken, and only then can it be handed over — in person, at the office indicated on your receipt.

What to bring to the collection appointment
- The receipt (resguardo) you were given at the fingerprint appointment. This is the key document.
- Your passport, valid.
- The old card, if this is a renewal and it was not handed in already.
- The appointment confirmation.
Practical points people get wrong
- The collection is not automatic: without an appointment most offices will not hand the card over.
- It can be a different office from the one where your fingerprints were taken — check the receipt.
- A third person can only collect it with a notarised authorisation, and not every office accepts it.
- Check the card before leaving: surnames, date of birth, validity and the type of authorisation. Errors are corrected as a duplicate, and it is far easier to raise it at the counter.
If you have to travel before the card arrives
A pending card does not authorise travel. The instrument for that is the return authorisation (autorización de regreso), which is applied for at a police station and lets you leave and re-enter Spain while the card is being issued.
