Missed or Cancelled Appointment: What to Do

If you lost your slot, the only way back is another appointment — and they go in minutes. We watch the official system continuously and text you on WhatsApp when one opens. You pay when it is confirmed — request it here.

These are two different situations and it helps to separate them, because the consequences differ: you not attending, and the administration cancelling the appointment.

If you did not attend

  • The appointment is lost and you must request a new one. There is no fine, but you lose your turn.
  • In high-demand provinces that can mean weeks of waiting.
  • The fee 790 you already paid is not lost: it remains valid for the new appointment, as long as the procedure is the same.
  • If you had a justified reason (hospital admission, for example), keep the proof: some offices take it into account.

If you arrived late

Most offices will not see you more than a few minutes after your assigned time, because the diary runs back-to-back. It counts as a no-show. Arrive with 15 minutes to spare, especially at large stations with entry control.

If you were turned away for missing documents

It happens more than you would think: the fee was unpaid, the padrón certificate was too old, or you had no photocopies. In practice it equals not attending, and you must book again. Check the document list before you go.

If the administration cancelled your appointment

  • They usually notify you by email or SMS. Keep that notice: it proves the cancellation was not yours.
  • The usual reasons are system incidents, office closures or diary reorganisations.
  • You are entitled to request a new appointment, and in some cases the office reassigns the date itself.
  • If you had paid a private service for that appointment, claim: the service was not delivered.

How to get another appointment fast

  • Widen your date range: the more margin you give, the more options there are.
  • Accept several offices in your province, not only the one in your city.
  • Have the fee paid and your documents scanned before entering the system.
  • Try at different times of day, including first thing in the morning.

And if my card expires while I wait?

The receipt of your application in progress proves your situation: always carry it. If you need to leave Spain in that period, consider a return authorisation, requested at a police station and used together with your passport.

Last reviewed: 30 August 2026.

Sources: current Spanish immigration legislation and the electronic offices of the National Police and the Ministry of the Interior. Always check your own office's official information before attending.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a fine for missing the appointment?

No. There is no financial penalty for not attending. What you lose is the slot, and in saturated provinces that can cost weeks.

Is the fee 790 lost if I miss the appointment?

No. The fee remains valid for a new appointment for the same procedure. Keep the original receipt.

How late can I arrive?

Practically not at all. Many offices close the slot at the exact time. With 15 minutes to spare you are safe.

The administration cancelled my appointment — do I get priority?

In some cases the office reassigns the date directly. If not, you request it again. Keep the cancellation notice in case you need it.

Can someone attend in my place?

Not for fingerprints: it is a personal, biometric procedure. For card collection some offices accept an express authorisation.

Do you charge to search for the new appointment?

Only once the appointment is confirmed and you can verify it. If no slot appears, you pay nothing.
