What you should keep in mind

  • It is issued with limited validity and must be renewed when it expires.
  • It is not valid for travel to the holder’s country of origin: that exclusion is stated in the document itself.
  • It is not a visa. Each country you travel to may still require its own visa.
  • It does not replace your residence card: they are two separate documents and you should carry both.

Who can apply for the travel document?

Mainly people with recognised international protection (refugees and subsidiary protection), stateless people, and those who can evidence that they cannot obtain a passport from their country of origin. The exact requirements are assessed case by case by the administration.

Does the travel document work as a passport?

It serves as a travel document in its place, but it is not a passport and does not replace one for all purposes. Destination countries may apply their own requirements and ask for a visa.

Can I travel to my country of origin with it?

No. The travel document expressly excludes the holder’s country of origin, and travelling there may affect your protection status in Spain.

How long is it valid for?

It is issued with limited validity and must be renewed on expiry. The exact duration depends on your situation and the decision authorising it.

Is it the same as a return authorisation?

No. A return authorisation lets you leave and re-enter Spain while your card is being processed or has expired, and is used together with your passport. The travel document is for those who cannot hold a passport.

Travel document (titulo de viaje): who it is for

The titulo de viaje is a travel document issued by Spain to people who cannot obtain a passport from their own country. It is not a passport and not a residence card: it is a document that allows international travel in defined circumstances.

Who can request it

  • People granted refugee status or subsidiary protection, who cannot approach the authorities of their country of origin.
  • Stateless persons recognised as such in Spain.
  • Foreign residents who prove, with evidence, that their country will not issue or renew their passport.

What is required

  • Proof of your status: the resolution granting protection, or the statelessness recognition.
  • For the third route, documented proof of the refusal or impossibility, such as consular correspondence or an embassy certificate.
  • Your current residence card.
  • Photographs to the official specification, and the paid fee.
  • The completed application form and, where relevant, the reason for the journey.

How it works in practice

  • The appointment is booked at a National Police station under the travel-document procedure.
  • Validity and the countries that accept it are set out in the document itself: some states do not accept it, so check before booking flights.
  • Refugees are generally advised not to travel to their country of origin: it can be read as evidence that protection is no longer needed.
  • Renewal follows the same route and should be started well before expiry.
